  Corporate News Headline
Tata Motors Limited posted a full- year net income after the luxury unit had a pretax profit and sales gained amid economic growth. Consolidated net income totaled Rs. 25.7 bn for FY10, compared with a loss of Rs. 25.1 bn a year earlier. (Bloomberg)
Neyveli Lignite Corporation's consolidated net profit rose by 52% to Rs. 12.47 bn for FY10, over the same period last year. Total income rose 17.4% to Rs. 47.20 bn in FY10, from the previous fiscal. (BS)
Colgate-Palmolive posted a 48% jump in its standalone net profit to Rs. 1143.9 mn in Q4'10. The company's standalone net sales during Q4'10 stood at Rs. 5166 mn, up 13% from the corresponding period a year ago. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
The government is banking on the private sector for the bulk of the USD 60 bn investment needed for its ambitious five-year programme to fill the "road deficit", Highways Minister Kamal Nath said. "We require USD 60 bn, out of which USD 40 bn would come from the private sector," he said. (BS)
The US economy grew in the first quarter at a slower pace than previously calculated, as the 3% increase at an annual rate in Gross Domestic Product was less than the advance estimate of 3.2% issued last month, as per the Commerce Department. (Bloomberg)
More Americans than forecast filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, indicating firings persist even as the economy rebounds and employment picks up. Initial jobless claims fell by 14,000 to 460,000 in the week ended May 22, Labor Department figures showed in Washington. (Bloomberg)

  Corporate News Headline
Tata Steel reported a consolidated loss of Rs. 200.09 bn for the year ended March 31, 2010. The steelmaker had a net profit of Rs 49.50 bn in the year ended March 31, 2009, Tata Steel said. (BS)
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation plans to invest Rs. 300 bn to set up a 15-16 million tonnes-a-year refinery on the west coast. The refinery, which may be in Raigad district of Maharashtra, is being mulled to make up for space constraint that its Mumbai refinery faces at present. (BS)
Mahindra & Mahindra announced that it will acquire 55.2% stake in electric carmaker Reva, marking its entry into the alternative fuel-based passenger vehicle space. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
The Reserve Bank of India will ensure adequate liquidity in the banking system, Deputy Governor K C Chakrabarty said, amid concerns cash could be tight in the coming week due to payments for 3G mobile spectrum. Short-term interest rates have been rising on concerns that these payments, due by May 31, could create a temporary liquidity crunch. (BS)
Purchases of new homes in the US jumped in April as buyers rushed to qualify for a government tax credit before it expired at the end of the month. Sales climbed 15% to an annual pace of 504,000, figures from the Commerce Department showed. (Bloomberg)
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government approved USD 30 bn of budget cuts as part of a European effort to convince investors that euro nations can trim deficits. The measures include a three-year wage freeze for civil servants and a crackdown on tax evasion, the government said in a statement. (Bloomberg)
