| | | Fueled healthy corporate earnings reports and better than expected economic data, US markets closed marginally higher. The markets started the day on positive note, after a series of strong quarterly earnings reports from global shipping firm United Parcel Service, telecom operator AT&T, fast food giant McDonald's, farm & construction machinery manufacturer Caterpillar and insurance firm Travelers. Markets also cheered report from Conference Board which showed that its index of leading economic indicators saw a 0.3% increase in September, in-line with expectations. Some positive bias also came after US first-time unemployment benefits declined 23,000 to 4,52,000 for the week ended October. However, markets pared some of the gains on concerns of more scrutiny over banks' mortgage transactions. A stronger US dollar and weak commodity prices also weighed on investors sentiments. | | |
| | | European markets closed firm as a flurry of strong earnings reports from US & European companies and better-than-expected growth numbers from Germany helped markets overshadowing struggling British economy. Market sentiments were lifted after data showed that German private sector growth accelerated during October as both manufacturing and services sector expanded at a stronger pace. The Flash Germany Composite Output Index increased to a reading of 56 from 54.7 in September. Further, a slew of strong corporate earnings from the likes of Nokia to UPS helped markets higher. Meanwhile, markets overlooked reports that showed decelerating Euro zone private sector growth and an unexpected fall in UK's retail sales. | | |
| | | The domestic bourses ended on a robust note after trading rangebound during the first half of the session. The benchmark indices kicked off the day on a positive note tracking strong global cues. The Asian markets traded on a mixed note amid slow down in China's economy during the year. On the flipside, the US market closed on a strong note overnight amid some better-than-expected corporate results, boosting the morning. The domestic benchmark indices were seen trading rangeboung till mid-session. But during the second half the bourses gained substantial momentum and journeyed northwards, making fresh intraday highs. Finally, the benchmark Nifty managed to close above the 6,100 mark. In the sectorial front, the FMCG space was in limelight, gaining the most by 3.19% on the back of significant buying interest. Besides, the Banking, Oil&Gas and Metal sectors also gave good support surging by more than 2% each. Both the Nifty and Sensex managed to close near their respective session highs. The NSE Nifty closed above the 6,100 mark, while the BSE Sensex ended above the 20,250 level. | | |
