  Corporate News Headline
Larsen & Toubro said it had got orders worth Rs. 10.25 bn for projects in the western city of Mumbai and a cement plant. (ET)
Steel Authority of India hopes to stitch up a joint venture with Japan's Kobe Steel within the next six months. The two companies are in talks to set up a 0.5 million tonne greenfield steel plant in India using Kobe Steel's pioneering new steel-making technology. (ET)
Era Infra has achieved the financial closure of a Rs. 6.92 bn Uttarakhand road project, which was awarded to the company by the National Highway Authority of India. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
Foreign direct investment in the country declined by about 45% to USD 1.41 bn in June this year, an official said. The FDI inflows in June 2009 were USD 2.58 bn. The sectors which attracted foreign investment, include services, telecommunication, construction activities and computer software and hardware, the official added. (BS)
Service industries expanded in July at a faster pace than forecast, easing concern US economic growth will slacken in the second half of the year. The Institute for Supply Management's index of non- manufacturing businesses, which covers about 90% of the economy, rose to 54.3 from 53.8 in June. (Bloomberg)
Growth in Europe's services and manufacturing industries accelerated in July, suggesting the recovery will maintain its momentum. A composite index based on a survey of euro-area purchasing managers in both industries rose to 56.7 from 56 in June, London-based Markit Economics said. (Bloomberg)

US stocks rose, sending the Standard & Poor's 500 Index to its highest close in more than two months, as faster-than-estimated growth in service industries and jobs quelled concern the economy is slowing. The NASDAQ, Dow Jones and S&P 500 advanced 0.92%, 0.41% and 0.61%, respectively. Priceline.com Inc. jumped 22% after forecasting earnings that exceeded estimates. Barnes & Noble Inc. soared 19% as the biggest US bookstore chain said it will consider selling the company.

UK stocks retreated as a selloff in shares of Next Plc and Standard Chartered Plc overshadowed a report on service industries in the US which expanded at a faster pace than forecast. The FTSE 100 slipped 10.32 points or 0.19% at 5,386.16. Next tumbled the most since December 2008 after the retailer forecast "more restrained" consumer spending. Standard Chartered dropped 5.2% from a record high as revenue at its consumer banking unit missed some analysts' estimates. British Land Co. lost 2.6% as the real-estate investment trust forecast a cooling of the London rental market.
