  Corporate News Headline
Tata Power plans to invest Rs. 700 bn to increase capacity to 25,000 megawatts (Mw) by 2017, a top company official said. (BS)
BHEL would form a JV with the Kerala government for acquiring a unit of Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company Ltd. (BS)
Tata Steel is in talks with banks to raise between USD 4.5 bn to USD 5.5 bn loan to refinance debt at its European unit Corus, its managing director said. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
The RBI asked banks to work out a special concessional package for the crisis-ridden aviation sector, in response to which the lenders said they will look into the problems on a case-to-case basis. (BS)
German exports fell and industrial production rose less than economists forecast in July, suggesting the recovery in Europe's largest economy is losing momentum. Sales abroad dropped 1.5% from the previous month, while production increased 0.1%, reports from the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden and the Economy Ministry in Berlin showed. From a year earlier, production increased 10.9% when adjusted for the number of work days (Bloomberg)
Job openings in the US rose in July, a sign some employers are getting ready to expand as the world's largest economy recovers, a government report showed. Openings increased by 178,000 to 3.04 million, the Labor Department said. (Bloomberg)

US stocks advanced, sending the Standard & Poor's 500 Index higher for the fifth time in six days, as concern eased that Europe's sovereign debt crisis will derail the global economic recovery. The NASDAQ, Dow Jones and S&P 500 gained 1.27%, 0.45% and 0.64%, respectively. JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bank of America Corp. gained at least 1.2% and European stocks rose on improved demand for Portuguese and Polish bonds. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. added 1.6% as KKR & Co. and Perella Weinberg Partners LP were said to be in talks to hire its US proprietary trading group. Apple Inc. rallied 2% after UBS AG raised its profit and share-price estimates.

UK stocks advanced, led by gains in BP Plc and ARM Holdings Plc, as governments from Portugal to Poland reported increased demand at auctions of their debt. The FTSE 100 added 21.92 points or 0.41% at 5,429.74. BP gained 1.3% after its credit rating was raised and it said no single mistake caused the Macondo oil well to leak into the Gulf of Mexico. ARM rose 5.8% after Royal Bank of Scotland Plc said the company has won an order from Samsung Electronics Co.
