  Corporate News Headline
Punj Lloyd said its Saudi Arabia-based group firm Dayim Punj Lloyd has secured a contract from state oil company Saudi Aramco for construction of a pipeline. (BS)
Reliance Industries is ostensibly seeking a 25% increase in the price of natural gas it produces from the eastern offshore Krishna-Godavari Basin after it wrote to the Oil Ministry saying it has customers willing to pay more than the government-approved price. (BS)
Tata Motors Ltd said its global vehicle sales in August rose 29% from a year earlier to 85,114 units. Jaguar and Land Rover sales in the month rose 29% to 16,220 units. (BS)

  Economic and Political Headline
Exports grew by 22.5% to USD 16.64 bn in August compared to the same period last fiscal. Imports jumped by 32.2% yoy to USD 29.7 bn in August. During April-August this fiscal, exports posted a growth rate of 28.6% to USD 85.27 bn on a yoy basis. Imports during the April-August period grew by 33.1% to USD 141.89 bn. The trade deficit widened to USD 13.06 bn in August compared to the year-ago period. For the April-August, 2010, period, the trade deficit amounted to USD 56.62 bn. (BS)
Production in the US cooled in August as automakers scaled back following a surge in output the prior month. Industrial production increased 0.2% last month after rising 0.6% in July, figures from the Federal Reserve showed. Manufacturing expanded 0.5% excluding autos. (Bloomberg)
Manufacturing in the New York region expanded at a slower pace than forecast in September. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's general economic index fell to 4.1 this month, the lowest reading since July 2009, from 7.1 in August. (Bloomberg)

US stocks advanced, sending benchmark indexes to the highest levels in five weeks, as speculation companies will be bought or return cash to shareholders raised investors' optimism. The NASDAQ, Dow Jones and S&P 500 gained 0.57%, 0.44% and 0.35%, respectively. Travelers Cos. advanced 2.9%, the most in the Dow Jones, after boosting its forecast for stock buybacks. Novell Inc. rose 5.9% after the New York Post said the company reached an agreement to sell itself. McKesson Corp. helped lead gains among health-care companies after Lazard Capital Markets said it may rally.

UK stocks declined, dragging the benchmark FTSE 100 Index lower for the first day in six, as shares of BP Plc and AstraZeneca Plc retreated. The FTSE 100 slipped 11.85 points or 0.21% at 5,555.56. BP fell 2.7% after the Financial Times reported that the energy company failed to comply with emergency regulations for North Sea oil installations. AstraZeneca lost 1.1% after saying US regulators will delay a decision on the drugmaker's Brilinta application. Next Plc rallied the most in a year as it reported a 15% increase in first-half pretax profit.
