 Corporate News Headline
BHEL has bagged a Rs. 26.65 bn contract for setting up a 1,200 MW coal-based thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh. (BS)
Fortis Healthcare said its founder firm Fortis Healthcare Holdings has pledged 33 million shares or 37.78% of total equity shares of the former on July 9. (BS)
Tata Steel has started talks with lenders including Citigroup to refinance as much as GBP 3.5 bn in loans for its British unit. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
The RBI's monetary stance will depend on whether it perceives inflation as stemming from excessive liquidity or due to supply constraints. Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar allayed concerns of persistently high prices, reiterating the government's forecast of headline inflation easing to 5-6% by the end of the year. (BS)
Housing starts fell in June to the lowest level since October as a slump in sales following the expiration of a government tax incentive caused U.S. builders to cut back. Work began on 549,000 houses at an annual rate last month, down 5% from May, Commerce Department figures showed in Washington. (Bloomberg)
Payrolls decreased in 27 US states in June, led by California and New York, signaling the slowdown in hiring is broad-based. Employers in California cut staff by 27,600 workers last month and those in New York reduced employment by 22,500, the Labor Department said. (Bloomberg)

US stocks rose for a second day, erasing earlier losses as speculation the Federal Reserve will take steps to spur lending and an increase in building permits sent homebuilders and commodity producers higher. The NASDAQ, Dow Jones and S&P 500 added 1.18%, 0.74% and 1.14%, respectively. Lennar Corp. rose 6.3% and US Steel Corp. gained 7.5%. Harley-Davidson Inc. advanced 14% after its profits topped analyst estimates. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. increased 2.2% after reporting second-quarter earnings.

UK stocks fell for a fifth day, the longest losing streak for the FTSE 100 Index in two months, led by a slump in Cable & Wireless Worldwide Plc after warning profit will be at the "lower end" of forecasts. The FTSE 100 fell 8.82 points or 0.17% at 5,139.46. Cable & Wireless Worldwide tumbled 17% as the phone company said government spending cuts are hurting earnings. BT Group Plc, Britain's largest fixed-line phone company, dropped 3.2%. Mining shares limited declines as copper rallied on the London Metal Exchange.
