    US markets

US markets ended with modest gains after trading in and out of negative territory most of the day. Government's tax-cut deal lifted hopes for economic growth but sparked a surge in Treasury yields on thoughts of the expanding deficit. President Obama has agreed to expiring tax cuts not just for the middle class but also for higher earners. Commodity prices retreated as dollar gained on hopes of better economic growth and also on concerns that China may raise interest rates. Fall in commodity prices hurt materials, energy and industrial companies.

    European markets

European markets ended mixed as strength in financial stocks countered losses among miners and automakers. French market closed in green after better-than-expected industrial sentiment data. The French industrial sentiment climbed in November to 107 from a revised 104 in October, survey data from the Bank of France showed. However, weak data from Germany and ongoing debt worries pulled other markets down. German exports dropped 1.1% month-on-month to EUR 83.3 billion in October following a 3% increase in September. Some optimism also came from after from M&A front. Private-equity firm Apax is in talks to buy one of its rivals, Danish cleaning company ISS, for USD 8.5 billion.
