  Corporate News Headline
Tata Consultancy Services a 24.25% jump in its June quarter profit at Rs. 19.07 bn over the year-ago period. The IT major had reported a net profit of Rs. 15.34 bn in the first quarter of last fiscal. (BS)
Larsen & Toubro said that it would be investing about Rs. 36 bn in the power equipment manufacturing units in India. (BS)
Axis Bank reported a jump of 31.85% in its net profit to Rs. 7.42 bn for the quarter ended June 30, 2010, over the same period last year. The bank had a net profit of Rs. 5.62 bn in the June quarter of the previous fiscal, Axis Bank said. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
Annual food inflation inched up to 12.81% for the week ended July 3, while fuel inflation shot up to 14.27%, reflecting the hike in oil prices. While vegetable prices fell by 5.70% year-on year, costlier pulses and cereals kept food inflation higher. Potato became cheaper by nearly 43%, while onion prices were down 5% on an annual basis. Cereals turned dearer by 6.04% and rice by 6.10%. Prices of pulses shot up 28.98% and that of milk by 15.91%. Year-on-year fruit prices went up by 15.91%. (BS)
Industrial production in the US unexpectedly rose in June as higher temperatures across the nation led to increased utility use. Factory output, which makes up 75% of the total, declined the most in a year. Production at factories, mines and utilities increased 0.1% after a 1.3% gain in May, figures from the Federal Reserve showed. (Bloomberg)
China's economic expansion eased to 10.3% in the second quarter and industrial production cooled more than forecast in June, signaling a deeper second- half slowdown that may add to risks for the global economy. The gain in gross domestic product was less than an 11.9% increase in January-March from a year earlier. (Bloomberg)

US stocks recovered from an early slump as BP Plc said it temporarily halted the flow of oil from its Gulf of Mexico well and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. rallied before settling the federal government's fraud lawsuit. The NASDAQ and S&P 500 rose 0.15% and 0.12%, respectively, while Dow Jones slipped 0.07%. BP's US shares advanced 7.6%. Goldman Sachs jumped 4.4% in regular trading after the Securities and Exchange Commission said it planned a "significant announcement" when markets closed. Once the USD 550 mn settlement was announced, Goldman shares jumped again, rising another 2.9%.

UK stocks declined for a second day, led by mining companies, as reports on manufacturing in the US lagged economists' forecasts, reigniting concern that the global recovery may falter. The FTSE 100 retreated 42.23 points or 0.80% to 5,211.29. Kazakhmys Plc fell 1.8%, while Rio Tinto Group slumped 3.3%. Barclays Plc tumbled 4.2%. GlaxoSmithKline Plc jumped 1.8% after the drugmaker said it has settled the majority of product-liability cases linked to its Paxil and Avandia treatments. Experian Plc rallied 2.5% after saying first-quarter revenue rose.
