  Corporate News Headline
Punj Lloyd, in a joint venture with Spain's Tecnicas Reunidas, has bagged a USD 463 mn Gas Gathering Package contract, as part of a programme to develop the Shah sour gas reservoir. (BS)
Mahindra & Mahindra is understood to have convened a special meeting of its board on July 15 to decide its future course of action regarding acquisition of beleaguered South Korean firm SsangYong Motor. (BS)
Infosys Technologies Ltd reported a surprise 2.6% drop in quarterly profit but raised its full-year revenue forecast on hopes of strong outsourcing demand from overseas clients. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
A new system of inflation measurement, under which price changes of about 250 extra items would be covered, is likely to be rolled out by the government on August 14. The present monthly inflation measurement system, based on the wholesale price index, reflects the price variations of 435 items. (BS)
The trade deficit in the US unexpectedly widened in May to the highest level since November 2008 as a gain in imports outpaced growth in exports. The gap expanded 4.8% to USD 42.3 bn as US companies imported more automobiles and consumer goods, Commerce Department figures showed in Washington. (Bloomberg)
German investor confidence declined for a third month in July as Europe's debt crisis threatens to cripple economic growth and banks undergo stress tests to prove their durability. The Mannheim-based ZEW Center for European Economic Research said its index of investor and analyst expectations, which aims to predict developments six months ahead, fell to a 15-month low of 21.2 from 28.7 in June. US stocks surged, extending the longest rally for the S&P 500 Index in three months, as improving outlooks from companies such as Alcoa Inc. and Novellus Systems Inc. bolstered confidence in the economy. The S&P 500, Dow Jones and NASDAQ soared 1.54%, 1.44% and 1.32%, respectively. Alcoa Inc., the biggest US aluminum producer, gained 1.2% as sales and profit exceeded analysts' estimates and the company forecast stronger global demand. Novellus rose 5.8%. ADC Telecommunications Inc. jumped 41% after agreeing to be bought.

UK stocks advanced for a sixth day, led by BP Plc on speculation a new cap installed on its leaking Gulf of Mexico oil well will help stop the gusher. The FTSE 100 added 104 points or 2.01% to close at 5,271.02. BP climbed to a five-week high. Abu Dhabi's crown prince said the emirate is considering an investment in the energy company that lost half its value following the worst oil spill in US history. Anglo American Plc paced mining shares higher as metal prices rose and Alcoa Inc. reported earnings that beat estimates.
