  Corporate News Headline
Hindalco Industries reported net profit of Rs. 5.34 bn for the first quarter ended June 30, 2010 up 11% from Rs. 4.81 bn in the corresponding quarter ended in the last financial year. Net sales at Rs. 51.78 bn in Q1'11 were up 33% over the same quarter last year, driven by higher volumes, better product/geographic mix and improved realisation. (BS)
Ashok Leyland reported 65.98% jump in July commercial vehicle sales at 6,747 units compared to the same month last year. The company had sold 4,065 units in July last year, Ashok Leyland said. (BS)
Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd will sell jet fuel to Vijay Mallya-run Kingfisher Airlines only against cash as it has failed to provide bank guarantee cover against payment defaults. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
India's exports rose for the eighth straight month in June, growing an annual 30% to USD 17.75 bn, government data on Monday showed. Imports for the month rose 23% to USD 28.3 bn, widening the country's trade deficit to USD 10.55 bn. (BS)
Orders placed with US factories declined more than forecast in June, a sign manufacturing will cool in coming months. The 1.2% decrease in bookings followed a revised 1.8% decline in May, figures from the Commerce Department showed in Washington. (Bloomberg)
The number of contracts to purchase previously owned houses unexpectedly fell in June, indicating demand kept unraveling after the expiration of a homebuyer tax credit. The index of pending home resales dropped 2.6% from the prior month, figures from the National Association of Realtors showed in Washington. (Bloomberg)

US stocks fell, pulling the Standard & Poor's 500 Index down from a 10-week high, as weaker- than-estimated data on home sales, factory orders and consumer spending cast doubt on the economic recovery. The NASDAQ, Dow Jones and S&P 500 slipped 0.38%, 0.36% and 0.48%, respectively. Procter & Gamble Co slid 3.4% and Dow Chemical Co dropped 10% after earnings trailed estimates. Losses were limited as Pfizer Inc. rose 5.6% to lead a rally in health companies after earnings beat estimates, and energy shares gained as oil topped USD 82 a barrel.

UK stocks were little changed, with the FTSE 100 Index near the highest level in 11 weeks, as declines by ITV Plc and Investec Plc were offset by gains in GlaxoSmithKline Plc and British American Tobacco Plc. The FTSE 100 slipped 0.63 points or 0.01% at 5,396.48. Investec retreated 5.6%, leading declines on the benchmark FTSE 100, after selling new shares. ITV fell 3.6% after saying the outlook is uncertain for Britain's biggest terrestrial commercial broadcaster. HSBC Holdings Plc lost 1.8% as Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc downgraded its stance on the shares.
