  Corporate News Headline
Cairn Energy is in talks to sell stake in its Indian unit, Cairn India, which owns the massive Rajasthan oilfields. Though Cairn Energy did not identify the suitor, speculation is rife that it could be Vedanta Resources Plc. (BS)
Tata Steel reported a consolidated net profit of Rs. 17.91 bn for the April- June quarter of the fiscal. The company had suffered a loss of Rs 22.39 bn in the corresponding period a year ago. (BS)
State Bank of India has posted 26% jump in its consolidated net profit to Rs. 29.35 bn as compared to Rs. 23.30 bn in the previous quarter, a year ago. (BS)
  Economic and Political Headline
Snapping an eight-month trend of double-digit rise, industrial growth slid to 7.1% in June from 8.3% a month ago. Growth in manufacturing fell to 7.3% from 8% a year ago. Electricity generation expanded by 3.5% from 8% in June 2009. Mining expanded at 9.5%, but was lower than 14.2% registered a year ago. Consumer durable was the only industry to show good growth expanding by 27.4% against 16.2% a year ago. (BS)
More Americans unexpectedly filed applications for unemployment insurance last week. Initial jobless claims rose by 2,000 to 484,000 in the week ended Aug. 7, Labor Department figures showed. (Bloomberg)
European industrial production unexpectedly declined in June, led by a drop in durable consumer goods. Output in the economy of the 16 nation's euro region dropped 0.1% from May, when it increased 1.1%, the European Union's statistics office said. (Bloomberg)

US stocks fell, sending the Standard & Poor's 500 Index to the biggest three-day decline since July 1, after an unexpected rise in unemployment claims added to evidence the recovery is weakening. The NASDAQ, Dow Jones and S&P 500 fell 0.72%, 0.57% and 0.54%, respectively. Cisco Systems Inc., the world's largest maker of networking equipment, tumbled 10% after forecasting sales that missed analysts' estimates. Juniper Networks Inc. dropped 6.8%. Caterpillar Inc., the world's largest maker of construction equipment, retreated 1.8% as rising jobless claims signaled firings stepped up.

UK stocks rose, ending a two-day losing streak, as gains in Cairn Energy Plc and SABMiller Plc offset losses in Vedanta Resources Plc and De La Rue Plc. The FTSE 100 added 20.85 points or 0.40% at 5,266.06 Cairn Energy climbed after Vedanta confirmed it has held talks with the oil and gas exploration company to buy some assets. Vedanta's shares dropped 7.5%. SABMiller and Diageo Plc rose as food and beverage stocks advanced in Europe. Dana Petroleum Plc plunged after it said it would not recommend a takeover offer from Korea National Oil Corp.
