 US markets

US stocks ended flat as mixed earnings reports helped to limit the upside for the markets, however, investors were unwilling to make any significant moves ahead of next week's Federal Reserve meeting as well as the midterm elections. Initial weakness in the markets was overshadowed by consumer confidence index, which is rose to 50.2 in October from a revised 48.6 in September. A separate report showed that the S&P/Case-Shiller 20-city composite home price index rose at an annual rate of 1.7% in August compared to the 3.2% growth seen in July. In earnings news, Texas Instruments, Amgen, DuPont and Ford released their third quarter profit and revenues results that topped Wall Street expectations. Meanwhile, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Lexmark International posted lower than expected revenue and UBS reported an unexpected investment banking loss.

    European markets

European markets closed lower as investors shrugged off strong Britain's GDP data and worried over disappointing earnings from Swiss banking giant UBS AG and a cautious outlook from steelmaker Arcelor Mittal. In economic news, ratings agency Standard & Poor's revised up its outlook on the UK economy to stable from negative. Britain's gross domestic product grew 0.8% in the third quarter down from 1.2% in the second quarter and on annual basis, the economy expanded 2.8% in the third quarter, higher than the projected growth of 2.4%.
